Yoon-Hee: Improvisation

Having moved to France in the 1980s, Yoon-Hee (b. 1950) has been based in the South of France, where she has continued her artistic practice. Prioritizing the spontaneity of matter over the intentionality of the creator, the artist poses fundamental questions about “becoming” across various media, including sculpture, drawing, and painting. “Improvisation,” the core of her creative process, is an essential condition for bringing about emergence within the unpredictable. In an uncontrollable state where force, temperature, and the properties of metal converge, the flow of molten metal solidifies, leaving behind the traces of a fleeting moment. The artist captures the tension and rhythm arising from this uncertainty, discovering vital possibilities that remain inaccessible through meticulous planning. Her painting, likewise, is a trace of an instinctive response and an openness to the flow of energy encountered when facing the unknown. It is the irreversible record of a moment where action and matter intersect. For the artist, “Improvisation” is thus a performative attitude and a philosophy, a way of allowing matter to generate autonomously and reveal itself. Yoon-Hee has exhibited at institutions including the Museum Ludwig, Musée Cernuschi, and Daegu Art Museum. Her works are held in the collections of the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (FNAC), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Busan Museum of Art, and Jeonnam Museum of Art. _"I throw myself. It is a leap and a challenge toward an unknown world."_ 윤희(Yoon-Hee, b.1950)는 1980년대 프랑스로 이주한 이후 남프랑스를 기반으로 활동해온 작가로, 작가의 의도보다 물질이 지닌 자발성에 집중하며, 조각과 드로잉, 회화 등 매체를 넘나들며 생성에 관한 근원적 질문을 던져왔다. 작업 방식의 핵심인 ‘즉흥(Improvisation)’은 예측할 수 없는 과정 속에서 생성을 이끌어내는 필수적 조건이다. 힘과 온도, 금속의 성질이 뒤섞이는 통제 불능의 상황에서 쇳물의 흐름은 찰나의 흔적을 남기며 응고된다. 작가는 이러한 불확실성 속에서 발생하는 긴장과 리듬을 포착하며, 치밀하게 계획된 설계로는 결코 도달할 수 없는 살아있는 가능성을 발견한다. 회화 역시 아직 알 수 없는 가능성과 마주하는 과정에서 발생하는 에너지의 흐름에 자신을 열어둔 채, 즉흥적으로 반응하여 드러낸 흔적이다. 즉, 행위와 물질이 교차하며 남긴 되돌릴 수 없는 순간의 기록인 셈이다. 이처럼 작가에게 ‘즉흥’은 물질이 자율적으로 생성되고 스스로를 드러내도록 이끄는 수행적 태도이자 철학이다. 윤희는 독일 루드비히 미술관(Museum Ludwig)을 비롯해 프랑스 세르누스키 미술관(Musée Cernuschi), 대구미술관 등 국내외 주요 기관에서 전시해왔으며, 프랑스 국립현대미술기금(FNAC), 국립현대미술관, 부산시립미술관, 전남도립미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
