Seoul Art Neighborhoods Guide
Pick the right Seoul art district before you leave home.
Seoul is huge and split by the Han River, so a bad route means too much time on the subway. The fix is to commit to one district per outing and let the route stay local. Each of the city’s art neighborhoods has a clear character, which makes choosing easy once you know what you want.
Use current Seoul exhibitions first, then choose your area.
Samcheong-dong and Bukchon
Best for a museum-and-gallery day in the palace district.
Beside Gyeongbokgung, Samcheong-dong is the historic heart of the gallery scene, with galleries tucked along hilly lanes and hanok streets.
Core Stops
Why It Works
- Galleries are dense and walkable
- Easy to combine with the palace and Bukchon hanok village
- Good rhythm for both first-timers and repeat visitors
Hannam-dong and Itaewon
Best for flagship private collections and international galleries.
Hannam-dong has become the city’s high-end art district, anchored by the Leeum.
Core Stops
Why It Works
- A flagship museum plus international galleries in one area
- Walkable, with strong cafés and food between stops
- Good for a polished half-day
Gangnam (Cheongdam and Apgujeong)
Best for the luxury gallery circuit south of the river.
Gangnam’s Cheongdam and Apgujeong neighborhoods hold flagship international galleries among the boutiques.
Core Stops
Good For
- Repeat visitors who already know the north of the river
- Pairing art with shopping and food
- A focused south-of-the-river afternoon
Downtown and Jung-gu
Best for a central route that mixes art and public space.
Around Gwanghwamun and City Hall, downtown pairs museums with walkable civic art.
Core Stops
Why It Works
- Central and easy to reach
- Pairs naturally with Seoullo 7017 and the palace area
- Good for a shorter day
Hongdae and the Outer Districts
Best for street art and less predictable programming.
West of the center, the Hongdae area trades white-cube galleries for youthful, street-level visual culture.
- Hongdae Art Wall and Public Art Zone — Mapo-gu
- Ihwa Mural Village — A hillside mural neighborhood near Naksan Park
- SOMA Museum of Art — Beside the Olympic Park sculpture grounds
These are best when you are willing to let the programming lead instead of forcing a standard route.
How to Choose the Right Area
If You Are New to Seoul Art Days
Start with Samcheong-dong or Hannam-dong.
If You Want the Strongest Contemporary Route
Pick Hannam-dong or Gangnam.
If You Want Art Plus Street Energy
Choose Hongdae or the Ihwa mural area.
If You Only Have Two Hours
Stay in one district and do not try to cross the river.
Before You Leave Home
