About

'Face to Face' brings together the work of Alex Katz and Julian Opie in a dialogue around one of art's most enduring subjects: the human figure. Although working across distinct visual languages, both artists share an interest in reduction, distilling faces, bodies and gestures to their most essential forms. Their works explore how little information is needed for a figure to become immediately recognisable and present. 'Face to Face' suggests that reduction does not necessarily diminish presence. In the hands of Katz and Opie, it can sharpen it, allowing a glance, a stance, or a single line to become enough. Their works prompt reflection on how we recognise others through fragments of visual information, and on how contemporary image culture encourages us to simplify, frame, and read the people around us. A central figure in American figurative painting, Alex Katz has developed a distinctive visual language characterised by flattened space, crisp contours and an economy of detail. His portraits capture the immediacy of a glance, a gesture or a pose while preserving the individuality of his subjects. In Nikki II, the tightly cropped composition places the viewer directly before the sitter's gaze, while Yvonne in Green isolates the figure against a dark ground, allowing colour, expression and posture to take centre stage. Katz's apparent simplicity is carefully constructed, transforming everyday encounters into striking and enduring images. Julian Opie approaches the human figure through a concise graphic language shaped by contemporary visual culture, from signage and digital imagery to animation. His simplified forms reduce the body to its essential lines and movements while retaining a strong sense of human presence. In Aniela Bathing, the figure is distilled into clean, flowing silhouette, while The Angel 8. uses repetition and movement to evoke the rhythm and dynamism of contemporary life. Opie's work questions how we recognise and interpret the people around us through increasingly simplified visual codes. Bringing Katz and Opie together, 'Face to Face' explores the balance between specificity and universality, and the enduring power of the human figure when reduced to its most essential elements.
