About

To mark the centenary of François Morellet’s birth, the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, in partnership with the Centre Pompidou and the CNAP, is presenting a unique exhibition that reveals how the artist transformed architectural space into a playground for contemporary art. The monumental work integrated into the architecture Since the early 1970s, François Morellet has created nearly 140 monumental works, which he referred to as his ‘disintegrations’. Far from blending into the background, his installations engage with the space, disrupting perspectives, playing with light and challenging the rationality of lines. His approach, both rigorous and full of humour, invites the viewer on a playful journey through the heart of the architecture, transforming the visit into a true sensory and intellectual experience. A dialogue between art, heritage and the public The exhibition highlights Morellet’s influence on the way contemporary art can engage with and transform public and architectural spaces. His works, which can be found on building façades, in gardens, at railway stations and in squares, demonstrate a dynamic dialogue between geometric abstraction and the urban environment. By bringing together architectural heritage and contemporary creation, the exhibition offers a fresh and stimulating perspective on space. A national tribute This exhibition forms part of a wide-ranging national programme, coordinated by the Centre Pompidou in collaboration with Studio Morellet and the Mennour Gallery. It features new installations, the rediscovery of works in public spaces, talks, lectures and an international symposium. The aim is to re-examine François Morellet’s legacy, his place in art history, and the lasting influence of his work on contemporary artists. An event organised as part of the celebrations marking the centenary of François Morellet’s birth, on the initiative of the EstateMorellet and the Centre Pompidou #100xMorellet
