CHO Wing Ki: Dazzled in the Loop

Gallery EXIT presents CHO Wing Ki's solo exhibition 'Dazzled in the Loop'. The show extends her sustained engagement with urban landscapes and the many faces of everyday life. Here, she re-envisions selected earlier works, shifting from outward, recognizable city scenes toward a more intimate psychological terrain. Attentive to how people move, pause, and linger as they navigate the city, she captures fleeting moments suspended between motion and stillness, haze and clarity. People often follow instinct and a quiet sense of intention toward places of light, finding rhythm in familiar routes and repeated routines. As the city's glittering cycles continue to whirl, senses and memories are reawakened. Rather than lingering on the city's facade, Cho transforms the urban environment through repeated observation and reconstruction into a felt psychological rhythm that reveals resilience beneath daily tensions and the faint light that continues to guide one forward. Working primarily in oil, the artist shifts viewpoint and perspective with ease, using flattened geometric forms and blocks of colour to articulate objects and space. Overlapping routes and planes create a buoyant, flowing rhythm. Her palette has matured further: layered warm and cool tones hold energy and tension within an underlying order, forming cityscapes that are both immediately distinctive and emotionally resonant. The exhibition also presents prints alongside paintings, tracing her thinking as it moves from printmaking into oil. Shown side by side, the prints and paintings do more than contrast media; they recalibrate memory and image through repetition and reconstruction, and habitual ways of seeing are recalibrated. Materials and techniques become not only tools of depiction, but methods for processing lived urban experience. In 'The Escalating Whirl', the iconic long escalator at MTR Admiralty Station becomes a point of departure. A carefully orchestrated perspective shaped by reflections and refractions within the station recasts a familiar commute as a kinetic rhythm punctuated by brief pauses, drawing the gaze upward as the city's tempo becomes an embodied sensation. 'Enchanting Cheung Wing' draws from the Cheung Wing Road roundabout near the artist's studio in Kwai Hing. Interlocking geometry and colour blocks condense traffic, footbridges, and the resting area into distinct fields, anchored by an old Indian banyan at the loop's center. Repetition and layering, rooted in her print practice, operate as both formal language and the gradual settling of memory. In 'A Blaze of Colour', the nocturnal city becomes a rhythmic field in which palm forms read like fountains and fireworks as pedestrians weave through rotating bridges, caught in warm and cool light. Through accumulated layers and lucid structure, Cho weaves movement, gaze, and urban brilliance into a single pictorial order, turning the city into an emotional stage in continuous motion that is felt as much as it is seen. CHO Wing Ki (b. 1989, Hong Kong) graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011. Her work primarily focuses on oil painting and printmaking, with most of her pieces depicting the people around her in their work and daily lives. Through observing the details of their everyday moments, she explores her own place within the community. Cho Wing Ki is also a member of Prinhow, a local print-making collective.
