Best Art Museums in Hong Kong

The right museum depends on which side of the harbour you want to spend the day.

Hong Kong’s museum scene transformed once the West Kowloon Cultural District opened, and the city now has serious institutions on both sides of Victoria Harbour. A vague plan means too much time on the MTR, so the better move is to decide whether you want a West Kowloon flagship day, a Central heritage-and-gallery day, or a focused university museum.

If you want to compare current programming first, start with current Hong Kong exhibitions and the Hong Kong venue directory.

If You Want the Signature Hong Kong Museum Day

M+

Asia’s flagship museum of modern and contemporary visual culture, on the West Kowloon waterfront, is the clearest answer when you want scale, ambition, and a building worth the trip on its own.

Best for: first visits, contemporary and design-led collections, long museum days with harbour views.

Use it well: pick a few galleries before you arrive rather than trying to see all of it, and leave time for the waterfront.

Hong Kong Palace Museum

Next door to M+, this is the place for Chinese art and treasures presented in a striking contemporary building.

Best for: pairing with M+, Chinese art and antiquities, a single West Kowloon day.

If You Want Heritage Plus Contemporary in Central

Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts

A former police station and prison compound turned arts centre, and the best single anchor in Central. It mixes heritage architecture with strong contemporary exhibitions.

Best for: Central days, contemporary art with history, pairing with nearby galleries.

Use it well: treat it as a half-day anchor, then walk into the surrounding gallery district.

Hong Kong Museum of Art

On the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the city’s main public art museum spans Chinese antiquities, ink, and modern Hong Kong art.

Best for: harbourfront routes, Chinese and Hong Kong art, a classic museum visit.

If You Want a Focused or University Museum

The oldest museum in Hong Kong, strong on Chinese antiquities, and an easy quieter alternative to the big institutions.

Best for: quieter visits, Chinese art, a half-day on Hong Kong Island’s west side.

Art Museum, CUHK

A serious university collection of Chinese painting, calligraphy, and antiquities up in Sha Tin.

Liang Yi Museum

A private museum in Sheung Wan known for antique furniture and decorative arts, and a focused contrast to the contemporary scene.

If You Want a Smaller or Civic Stop

These are better for repeat visitors than first-timers, but they make for stronger days once you already know the obvious museums.
