First Friday Gallery Openings in San Francisco
How to do SF opening night well.
First Thursday (and sometimes First Friday) openings are the quickest way to see several new shows in one night. This guide is built for real evenings: where to start, when to move, and how to avoid burning out by stop three.
How First Thursdays Work
On the first Thursday of each month, galleries across San Francisco open new exhibitions with evening receptions. Most nights follow a familiar pattern:
- Free and open to the public
- Social — Meet artists, collectors, and fellow art lovers
- Often include wine, beer, or snacks
- A fast way to see new shows and engage with the art community
Some galleries run First Friday or Saturday openings instead. Still, First Thursday is the backbone of SF’s monthly gallery rhythm.
Why People Actually Go
It’s Free
You can walk in, see the work, and leave whenever you want. No ticket, no cover.
Meet Artists
Many openings include the artist, and casual conversation is normal.
The Social Scene
This is where the SF art crowd mixes: artists, curators, collectors, and curious first-timers.
See Multiple Shows
Because openings cluster by neighborhood, you can see several fresh shows in a single loop.

Night-Of Tactics
Do a 10-Minute Plan
Not every gallery participates every month. Pick 3-4 must-see stops before you leave.
Use Arting to see current exhibitions and opening dates in one place, then jump into the San Francisco venue directory if you want to build a tighter route.
Pick Your Timing Window
- 5-6 PM — Less crowded, more time with art
- 6-7 PM — Peak crowd, most social
- 7-8 PM — Crowd thins, relaxed conversation
Keep the Route Realistic
If you’re hitting multiple openings:
- Start at Minnesota Street Project (efficient)
- Pick 3-4 shows max
- Allow 15-20 minutes per gallery
What to Wear
Anything works, from jeans to gallery black. Comfortable shoes matter more than dress code.
Don’t Be Shy
- Sign the guest book
- Ask gallery staff about the work
- Talk to other visitors
- Approach the artist (if present)
If You Miss First Thursday
Saturday Openings
Many galleries hold openings on Saturday afternoons (typically 3-6 PM). More relaxed than evening events.
Other Events

- Artist talks
- Panel discussions
