Downtown LA Art Walk

Your street-by-street plan for DTLA Art Walk.

The Downtown LA Art Walk is one of the city’s longest-running free cultural events. Every second Thursday, Downtown stays active late, so you can stack galleries, food, and people-watching into one walkable evening.

How the DTLA Art Walk Works

On the second Thursday of each month, from 6pm to 10pm, dozens of galleries and cultural spaces in Downtown LA host:

  • Free gallery openings — See new exhibitions
  • Artist receptions — Meet the creators
  • Live music and performances — Street entertainment
  • Food vendors — Local food trucks
  • Community gathering — Thousands of art lovers

The Art Walk has been running since 2004 and draws crowds of 5,000-10,000 people monthly.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

It’s Completely Free

Walk into any gallery, see the art, enjoy refreshments. No tickets, no cover charges.

Meet the Artists

Many galleries feature the exhibiting artists at opening receptions. This is your chance to ask questions and learn about the work directly.

Discover New Spaces

LA’s gallery scene is constantly evolving. The Art Walk is the perfect opportunity to discover new spaces you might otherwise miss.

The Social Scene

This is where LA’s art community comes together — collectors, artists, students, curious locals. It’s the most social art night of the month.

Logistics That Matter

Transit and Parking

Metro: Take the Metro to 7th Street/Metro Center or Little Tokyo/Arts District stations

Driving: Street parking is free after 6pm in most areas. Parking structures run $5-15

Rideshare: Uber/Lyft drop-off near 5th and Main is central

Best Arrival Window

  • 6-7pm — Early, less crowded, first pick of refreshments
  • 7-8:30pm — Peak time, biggest crowds, most energy
  • 8:30-10pm — Crowds thin, more space to view art

Route Strategy

You can’t see everything in one night. Pick a focus:

  1. Gallery Row focused — Stay on Main Street
  2. Arts District focused — Head east to the warehouses
  3. Mix — Start Main Street, end Arts District (or vice versa)

Comfortable Shoes

You’ll walk 1-3 miles depending on your route. Wear comfortable shoes.

Bring Cash

Some food vendors and smaller galleries are cash-only.

Quick Etiquette

  • You don’t have to buy anything — Looking is enough
  • Ask questions — Gallery staff and artists love to talk about the work
  • Don’t touch the art — Unless specifically invited to
  • Photography — Usually okay, but ask first for flash
  • Bring friends — Art is better shared

Accessibility

Most ground-floor galleries are wheelchair accessible. The Arts District has uneven sidewalks in places. Main Street/Gallery Row is generally more accessible.
