Nathan Wong | Angels

Nathan Wong is a multimedia artist whose materials shift with each body of work, chosen in response to what the work itself needs to express. In _Angels_, he works with heavily diluted acrylic, treating the paint as a collaborator rather than a medium to be controlled. Pigment pools and migrates across the canvas in ways reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink wash, guided by breath, air moving across wet paint, and gravity as the canvas tilts. Wong does not begin with a plan. Each painting begins with movement—a splash, a run, an uncontrolled gesture that he allows to remain. From there, the work unfolds intuitively. He describes the process as being led rather than deliberate, allowing each scene and each battle to emerge through the material itself. Living in solitude in the countryside, landscape has become both subject and method: a way of observing transformation, movement, and the forces that shape what grows. At the heart of the series is an act of faith: the belief that something beautiful can exist on the other side of chaos. Wong relinquishes control of the paint in much the same way he has learned to relinquish control of circumstance. This surrender becomes both an artistic process and a spiritual practice. For Wong, the answer is not to eliminate chaos, but to transform the way it is seen. He approaches the cup as more full than empty, trusting that a shift in interpretation can become a catalyst for growth. From a distance, the paintings resolve into something whole—a moment of order emerging from movement, conflict, and uncertainty.
