About

In Yoon Lee's large-scale painting "JFK" she combines architectural and landscape elements with sweeping movement; she activates the space as if with a tangible fourth dimension. From a distance the painting appears as a spontaneous amalgamation of structure and motion; up close as abstraction. In "JFK" she incorporates the interior architecture of an air train station with motion within and through it. "'JFK' came out of me wanting to do a work that goes from interior to exterior, to have a bi-directional thing and not just one point of perspective." A sense of speed is central to the dynamic nature of her paintings. "Once I filter references through the digital interface I start focusing more on things like how fast is it going from here to there and how can I communicate that? Speed really came into my mind as a subject when I introduced the digital interface into my process." Lee has developed her own painting technique where she meticulously applies layer upon layer of acrylic paint using fine-tipped squeeze bottles. Yoon Lee was born in Busan, Korea. She studied at Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, received a BA from UC San Diego, and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Yoon Lee's _JFK_ is presented through Mana Contemporary's partnership with PIEROGI Gallery.
