About

The staircase by the Royal Festival Hall becomes a playground of sonic exploration in _Stepping Out_, an interactive musical artwork commissioned for our 75th anniversary. Rising and falling arpeggios are triggered as people walk up and down the steps. As people step onto the round 'islands' of colour, additional music and instruments are activated, which combine with the arpeggios to create a wonderfully interactive, live musical experience. The piece is a collaborative work from the creative minds of Luke Jerram, known for his large-scale environmental installations; the BAFTA- and Ivor Novello Award-winning composer and sound designer Dan Jones; and musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Hop between the round 'islands' of colour that adorn the concrete steps and walkway to trigger the bespoke music. Programmed to change each week, you can pass through the site again and again – it's an ever-changing artwork sure to put a spring in everyone's step.
