About
Marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this display celebrates the political, cultural and diplomatic links that have connected the United States and the City of London over more than two centuries. Through rare documents and symbolic objects, it highlights moments of shared history during times of change, conflict and collaboration. Highlights include: Two letters dated 1775 sent to the City of London, acknowledging links between the City and America prior to the Declaration of Independence. One is from the General Committee of Association of the City and County of New York, the other from the Congress in Philadelphia A silk bookmark commemorating the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, on 14 April 1865. The Roll of Fame recording the Honorary Freedom of the City of London, open at the entry for General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The honour was given as a mark of appreciation for his part in the defeat of German Forces during the Second World War. This exhibition has been curated by The London Archives and features items from their vast collections.
