About

The **Gerald Moore Gallery** is delighted to present **_Archive Pressure_** by **David Hughes**, on view from **10 September** to **3 October 2026**. The private view is on **Thursday 10 September** from **6 – 8pm**. _Archive Pressure_ is an ongoing artistic project by David Hughes that explores how large collections of everyday digital photographs can be translated into new visual and material forms. Working with thousands of publicly available eBay listing images, it examines the overlooked traces embedded within everyday processes of documentation and circulation. Using a suite of custom-built computational systems, Hughes transforms these domestic photographs through a series of rule-based processes. Rather than relying on subjective image selection or compositional decisions, each system redistributes visual attention according to predefined behaviours, allowing objects, supporting details and incidental residues to shift in prominence as images are repeatedly reconfigured. Across the wider project, these computational systems generate large-scale prints, time-based works and sculptural investigations. Rather than presenting a single representation of an object, the work explores multiple ways in which the same source material can be reorganised, compressed and translated. Familiar objects remain partially recognisable while dissolving into shifting visual fields shaped by accumulation, redistribution, compression and fragmentation. Relationships emerge, intensify and disperse, producing works whose organisation remains fluid rather than fixed within a single hierarchy or viewpoint. Throughout the project, photographs are successively translated into language, structured data, computational behaviour and physical form. Each stage preserves elements of the previous one while introducing new interpretations, revealing how consistent systems of organisation can produce unexpected visual outcomes from ordinary source material. Rather than documenting objects, _Archive Pressure_ investigates what can emerge when coherent computational rules are applied across a large body of related images. The project considers how repetition, translation and the cumulative behaviour of many individual photographs can reveal structures and relationships that remain invisible within any single image **David Hughes** is an artist based in London.
