About
Big Things Coming tells the story of Degular, who works as a data-labeller by day and rapper by night. At work, Degular describes images with a language that is objective, manageable, promptable, calculated rather than “lived”. One night, Degular takes the stage at an open-mic and begins rapping, but its performance is received as try-hard and unimaginative. The following morning, at work, Degular is shown an unspeakable image by its boss and asked how it feels. Unable to describe it, Degular returns to the studio where it trains with its crew, and speaks of its struggles with interpretation and expectation. As the crew comes to terms with its condition, they leave language behind and begin dancing. A partial simulation of South East London and the Docklands, with Canary Wharf always present in the background but never reachable. Seen from the o2 south of the river, or Canning Town north of it, undertones of DLR core. A city that is approximated and lossy, made up of fleeting images, invisible walls, void and dark around the edges as if an LLM from 2003 had compressed it and uncompressed it to explain it (”sino grime, emirates airline”). A chatGPT London, a context-engineered london, a london prompted from bits, managed and manageable.
