About
Nelson W. Armour's photographs from his residency with Artists in the Public Schools (formerly CPSLives) examine teaching and what it means to be a teacher. His photographic essay is an homage to the challenges, triumphs, hard work and effort of teaching, from the small details to the big picture. This project is designed to help others better understand teachers and teaching. The idea is to examine the process of teaching. This includes the obvious times within the teacher's classroom, but also during preparation time before and after school, teacher meetings, after school activities, meetings lead by administrators, and parent meetings --- all the aspects of being a teacher. Armour's project was a two-year residency and included two Chicago Public Schools: the Lázaro Cárdenas Elementary School in the Little Village area of Chicago (2021-22 school year) and the Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School in the Austin neighborhood (2023-24 school year).
