About
Friedhard Kiekeben and Maria Burundarena's collaborative installation Walldrawings uses the architectural specificity of the Evanston Art Center's gallery as a starting point for an intervention into the space. The artists have a long-standing collaborative practice with shared interests in the intersection of conceptual art, urban space, public and private realms, and the materiality of photographic processes. Their wall drawings respond to existing architectural features and the flow of the space through a variety of graphic marks and media. Some marks are ephemeral and created through a performance with light and photosensitive materials, while others are permanent, etched into the wall as drawings. The resulting work challenges assumptions about the photographic medium, the nature of site-specific installation, and authorship. The exhibition presents a liminal experience of the physical space through optical and haptic perceptions, drawing the viewer's attention to the conditions of viewership, and the role of the viewer in shaping their own perception. Friedhard Kiekeben is a Professor of Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Maria Burundarena is an artist and curator living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This exhibition is partially sponsored by an Illinois Arts Council Agency Grant.
