About
Thomas Scheibitz explores the artistic possibilities of abstraction and figuration, dissolving their categorization into his own pictorial language. Sprüth Magers is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Scheibitz at the Berlin gallery, centered on the figure and bringing together new paintings and sculptures with historical works. The figure is present as a genre signal rather than a record of any individual. Elements coalesce to loosely suggest a face or body; they seem familiar, but also strange and new. Amid color fields and architectonic forms, figural traces appear as spindly zoomorphic silhouettes, biomorphic assemblages that hover between machine and man, or facial features pared down to their simplest geometric forms. The exhibition reinforces the consistent theme in his work: the relationship of the individual to reality, and how that relationship is influenced by visual messages.
