About

Architecture has always been about defining and shaping boundaries: between exterior and interior, public and private, natural and artificial. The form of these transitions reflects climatic, social, political, and cultural contexts. As in physics, architecture also raises questions about its extent and dimensions: a boundary can be a two-dimensional surface or, through densification, become a three-dimensional space. Open, presented by Labics—the Rome-based firm and AW Architect of the Year 2026—explores these questions through an installation of porticos in various formats that move between interior and exterior, thereby creating a hybrid, experience-oriented space. The exhibition views boundaries not as barriers, but as open, connecting spaces that mediate between city and architecture and facilitate social interaction. It advocates for restoring architecture’s role in shaping public space and collective life.
